Three modular homes built in Regina are set to make a 700 kilometre trip to northern Manitoba over the weekend. Herauf Modular Solutions are the makers of the homes. The modular homes will travel as a convoy to St. Theresa Point First Nation. To get to the community, the convoy will need to pass over five winter ice roads. When at the destination, the homes will then be used as transitional housing for youth. “This project represents an important step towards supporting people with safe, stable, and culturally appropriate housing during critical transition periods,” the company said in a press release. Each home is built on a unique skid to hold the weight of the structure. The skid is where the home can be lifted and moved. The homes each include a kitchen, bathroom and bedrooms. They are also being shipped with furniture and can easily be connected to electricity and water. Allan Herauf is the vice president of operations at Herauf Modular Solutions. He said there are many factors in this operation, but it is cheaper in the long run. If you want to build that unit up there … in the summertime, you are not getting there. You are flying your equipment and tools, and trades people they are tough to access,” he said. The convoy is scheduled to begin the journey at dawn Sunday morning.
