Rachel Ironside is marking a milestone very few ever reach — celebrating her 104th birthday at a Saskatoon care home. “I’m trying to tell everybody I’m 104, but they don’t believe me. That’s why I took out my birth certificate and carry it in my purse,” Ironside told CTV News this week. To say she’s seen the world change is an understatement. Ironside was born in 1921 and grew up on a farm in Ontario with no cars or electricity. “No telephones, no TV, no radios for many years,” she recalled. Those around her say her positive outlook is her biggest strength. “She’s kind. Warmth exudes from her,” daughter Joan Silbernagel said. Ironside’s daughter was concerned when she moved her mom to her current care home. However, that concern was short-lived after she got this response. “‘You know, Joan, I make friends wherever I go.’ At that moment, I knew she was going to be fine,” Silbernagel said. One of her closest friends lives with her at Oliver Place. They are big Edmonton Oiler fans and don’t miss a game. “She was my neighbour and we just clicked right away with everything and we still do,” Tillie Reach explained. When asked what her secret is to such a long life — Ironside’s answer was unique. “You’re going to laugh. It’s peanut butter,” she said with a laugh. She confirms that she starts every day with peanut butter and jelly on white, untoasted bread. She used to bake her own bread up until a few years ago. Her youngest brother, Terry Hyatt, travelled from Ontario for the celebration. His big sister wouldn’t take no for an answer. “She told me, you be here, and so here we are,” Hyatt told CTV News. “She’s amazing. Such a special sister. I am the youngest of the 14 siblings, and she’s the second oldest of the 14.” There are some good genes in the family, according to Hyatt — with most siblings making it well into their 90s. The birthday girl boasts a long line of descendants with 17 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, 10 great great-grandkids and even two great great great-grandchildren. Ironside had her second birthday party on Monday with friends and family by her side.
