The Regina Police Service (RPS) is warning local residents of phone scammers impersonating officers looking to fundraise for charity, after several reported incidents. The RPS reminds residents the service will never call to solicit funds for any reason, and offered some tips to avoid getting scammed, including never sharing personal information during an unsolicited call and avoiding sending money to people they don’t know. Police say grandparent scams are also continuing to circulate around the city, which typically involves a scammer calling an elderly person claiming to be the grandchild of the victim. During the call, the scammer tells the victim they’re in trouble and need money. In these scenarios, the victim gets caught up in the urgency and sends the money through courier or money transfer service. Police say if someone thinks they’re being scammed, they should take notes and ask for the caller’s phone number, hang up and make inquiries of their own, or call police.
